Our collage represents the concept of federalism. Federalism is a system in which power is divided between the national and state governments. Our collage is an Oklahoma flag with an American flag behind it. This represents the philosophy of federalism.
In the center stands Will Rogers. He is often called "Oklahoma's Favorite Son." He found a great deal of humor in politics. When he died tragically in a plane crash, world leaders mourned his passing. He was a great ambassador for Oklahoma. He is flanked by our current democratic governor, Brad Henry and his wife, and by our most recent republican Governor, Frank Keating and his wife. They represent the republicans or the elephants, and the democrats or the donkeys. Will Rogers represents everything in between.
On the Oklahoma flag is the word "Oklahoma" with a donkey and an elephant boxing. This represents the fact that republicans and democrats are usually fighting about certain issues. One such issue was the lottery. The lottery button symbolizes the variety of issues that they disagree on. We feel that the two party system gives strength to our government.
The pictures that surround them are ones of the capitol, the chambers inside the capitol, and the familiar oil well on the yard of the capitol. Also, the famous "mock wedding' on the day of statehood is pictured. There is also a picture of the musical "Oklahoma!" which made our state song one of the most famous state songs. Also, on our collage is a picture of the five famous ballerinas. They have been called our state's "treasures."
We hope you enjoy looking at the history in our collage. It was a remarkable experience for us as we searched for elephants, donkeys, and everything in between!
