Putting the Pieces Together

The collage is about the role our politics played in the union of two nations to form the state of Oklahoma. It took the combined efforts of the democratic and republican parties to create our state. The sculpture of the Pioneer and the Indian Woman, Sequoyah is symbolic of this union. The two figures look up to the sky as if they understand the significance of their marriage. This arrangement is the best possible solution to unite the state under one leadership. It brought healing to the Native American people because now they were united as one. The puzzle pieces coming together represent the children of the early 1900's and some of the minorities such as women and African American of the early to mid 1900' s. Some of these figures made a direct impact in Oklahoma politics while others were affected by the union of these two nations. The children jumping in the collage represent hope. These children will soon grow up and become either leaders of tomorrow or affect politics by voting in future elections. The buildings in the collage are significant because they represent a place where politics took place since the beginning of our statehood in Guthrie where our first territorial governor George W. Steel was sworn into leadership in 1907 and our state capital where our current governor is Brad Henry. This collage focuses on the development of the state of Oklahoma.
