A Place in Time Through Our Grandfathers' Eyes

There once was a time in America when a handshake was a binding contract. When men stopped keeping their word, promises were made "writing". The Treaty of New Echota was signed by few Cherokees, but required something from the lndians: removal from their homes as seen in the corner in the picture of the Trail of Tears.

As they marched from the east towards their new home, many a tear was shed, and blood was spilled. It is said that the teardrops that fell on that lonely road were the origin of the Cherokee Rose as seen below the picture of the Trail of Tears. Many people died of illness, starvation, and exhaustion. But their memories live on. Oklahoma is home to 39 tribes as demonstrated by the tribal seals and map.

The red and blue rocks on the border symbolize the two political parties, Republican and Democrat.  The picture on the left side titled Through My Grandfather's Eyes represents the past, and "tithes" have changed for the better, but not forgotten. Our grandfathers' legacies will always be honored surrounding and shaping our lives. The pages from the Dawes Roll book also shapes the lives of so many Native Americans giving documentation to an era of turmoil, but at the same time endorsing pride in a tribal membership. Tribes that are continuing to be valued as noted in the good news and the article about the creation of an Indian caucus preparing to "work together" to promote the interests and well being of Native Americans.

The Preamble of the U.S. Constitution is featured to illustrate the relationship between Federal, State, and Tribal governments. This is also to remind everyone that "We the people..." means everyone... "We are all brothers" with "one government". And isn't that what Chief Joseph was saying as displayed on the sheet music to our souls? And let us not forget the Bill of Rights. Rights guaranteed to everyone by our government.

At the top the present and past governors are displayed to signify that their role in Oklahoma politics teams not only Federal and State governments, but also Tribal governments. Their diligent efforts healed (medicine wheel) and created a diverse state rich in culture. Through our grandfathers' eyes, we can learn from the past to make life better now and forever.
