Entry 1

Honorable Mention - Elementary
Muldrow Middle School, Muldrow

Shawntel Smith Blvd.

The Shawntel Smith Blvd. collage is a representation of our town. It was made by the Competitive Academics class consisting of 7th and 8th grade boys and girls. We have spent many hours working on the collage. Our collage represents Muldrow well. It shows five places that are all different but important. We have been working on our collage for quite awhile, but a project this challenging should take time.

Our collage is made up of many parts coming together as one just as our class came together to create it. When we first started the collage, we really didn't know how it would turn out. Now, more than ever, we really appreciate our town, Muldrow, Oklahoma.

The collage is representing the town of Muldrow where we live, learn, work, pray, and play. We split into groups of four and voted on what should represent each part of the theme.

Some students' favorite part of the collage is the house. The house is supposed to be our mayor's house. It represents all of-the homes in Muldrow. Paper, glue, fabrics of different kinds, and stickers were all used on the house.

Another favorite part of the collage is the school because it represents our education in Muldrow. The flag represents our patriotism. We used balsa wood to make the top of the school and little bits of silk flowers for the flower beds. Some of us think we got the best assignment of the collage because we know everything about the school. We spend almost every day of our lives here and we really enjoyed working on the school.

Broadway Joe's was the place we chose to represent work in Muldrow. It is a great place to work or eat, and it is locally owned. We were personally proud of our sequin OU sign that we put on the roof.

We built the Church from paper, balsa wood, and sand paper. We started with the foundation and worked our way up. As in all things, a good foundation is required for a strong structure. In Muldrow, Churches provide that strong foundation so we have a strong community. Our Churches provide a refuge for Muldrow citizens as well as a strong moral message for our youth.

Exploring the jungle gym, playing a close basketball game, and having a picnic are just a few of the many activities available for people at the Muldrow city park. We believe the park represents a place for people to play. Muldrow just wouldn't be the same without fun and somewhere to just hang out. We took pictures of the park and tried to put as many objects onto the collage as we could. We chose the basketball goal, the pavilion, and the park benches.

Another interesting part of our collage is the people. They are made of foamy black paper: It is not the actual people but what they, represent that is so important to our town. The boy sitting on the bench at school represents, everybody connected with the school. The family walking into the Church represents the faithful and hopeful community that is Muldrow. The friends at the park represent how people come together to talk, play, laugh, and have fun.

The sky consists of light blue and pastel purple paper. The paper is covered with articles we found in our hometown newspaper "The Muldrow Times Star". We tore the paper and collaged all the pieces. The sky represents everyday people and news in our community.

The parade is a favorite of many of us. It has so much variety, color, and detail. We really think it is a beautiful finish for our collage. At the head of the parade is the police car leading the way with pride, confidence, and loud sirens. Next comes the fire truck with its bright, flashy, red color. Then comes a blue convertible carrying Muldrow's own Miss America, Shawntel Smith. She may be Muldrow's best known person. Three members of the Muldrow band follow. They are playing their instruments with graceful ease. They add sound and entertainment to a Muldrow parade. Bringing up the rear are two horses and riders that represent the rodeo community in Muldrow.

This was a great project to be involved in and we would like to design. another collage next year. It was a great experience. The class came together and created an awesome piece of art work. We think the collage took a long time to make and it was very hard work, but it looks great and the hard work really paid off.
