Enrichment students from Central Middle School in Edmond, #95

Our class designs, builds, and creates structures using higher-level thinking skills. Our class motto is: "If you can dream it, you can build it." We design sets for school plays, and we also helped to renovate our courtyard. Our class is always organized. Our teacher, Colonel Leonard Scott, a war veteran, assigns responsibilities to each person. He has very high expectations of all of us and accepts nothing but the best. It's no surprise to us that his favorite song is Tina Turner's "Simply the Best." He also prepares us for life and gets us involved in the world around us. He discusses current day issues with us.Colonel Scott has taught us to respect our teachers and peers. He respects us, and we respect him.

We chose to participate in "Collage 2001" because we thought it would be a challenge, and a way of honoring the Indians and first pioneers of our state. In addition, we wanted to learn more about Oklahoma's history.

We took the following steps to complete our project: First, we laid out the general design. Then we started cutting out pictures from magazines. When we discovered that we didn't have enough pictures, we called and asked Oklahoma Today magazine for donations. They sent us several magazines. Then we bought the wood and added paint and primer to it.

Next, we drew a scale picture of Oklahoma and used the drawing to make the state out of two pieces of foam board stacked and glued together. This made Oklahoma stick out from the rest of the project by half an inch. We did this so our project would be multi-dimensional. Before we glued it to the wood we cut material to go under it so it would stand out even more. Then we glued and nailed the material to the wood. After that, we glued the foam board picture of Oklahoma into position in the top right-hand corner. When it was secured, we applied color landscapes. Sunsets were used at the top, and then we used greens and blues at the bottom for a fading effect. The landscapes can be seen in the background. After that we glued on color pictures of Indians and some wildlife. The Indians really stand out because of their beautiful and bright colors.
